Over the past few decades, the field of mental health has been slowly undergoing a paradigm shift. As a society, we are moving away from highly medicalized, pathologizing medical models of mental illness towards the more holistic way of seeing health and wellness. We are beginning to see illness not as a random thing that happens to a few, bur rather (as Gabor Mate puts it), an “expected and therefore normal consequence of abnormal, unnatural circumstances”. Therefore, those of us who are experiencing symptoms are “living alarms, directing to our attention to where our society has gone askew”.
